Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion (ACDF)

A proven surgical solution for neck pain and pinched nerves

What Is ACDF Surgery?

Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion (ACDF) is a common minimally invasive neck surgery that removes a damaged or herniated disc in the cervical spine (neck) and stabilizes the area with a small bone graft or implant.

When Is ACDF Recommended?

ACDF is often recommended when patients experience:

  • Herniated or bulging cervical discs

  • Cervical spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal)

  • Neck pain that radiates into the shoulder or arm

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms

  • Failed response to non-surgical treatments

How the Procedure Works

  • Approach: A small incision is made in the front (anterior) of the neck

  • Disc Removal: The damaged disc is removed to relieve nerve pressure

  • Fusion: A bone graft or cage is placed in the disc space

  • Stabilization: A small plate and screws secure the area for fusion

✅ Outpatient or short hospital stay
✅ Performed under general anesthesia
✅ Takes approximately 1–2 hours

Recovery Timeline

  • Week 1–2: Rest, light activity, pain managed with medications

  • Week 3–6: Gradual return to daily activities, neck brace (if prescribed)

  • Month 2–3: Physical therapy may begin

  • 3–6 Months: Fusion takes hold, full recovery expected for most

ACDF Benefits

  • Relieves chronic neck and arm pain

  • Restores strength and sensation

  • Stops nerve compression

  • Stabilizes the cervical spine

  • Minimally invasive with small scar

Is ACDF Right for You?

Our spine specialists will evaluate your imaging, symptoms, and medical history to determine if ACDF or another treatment is best for you. Not all patients with neck pain need surgery — we prioritize conservative options first.
