ANKLE FUSION

If you suffer from constant ankle pain due to severe arthritis, injury, or deformity, ankle fusion surgery—also called ankle arthrodesis—may offer lasting relief. At Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, our experienced foot and ankle specialists perform ankle fusion procedures to eliminate pain, stabilize the joint, and restore daily function.

What Is Ankle Fusion?

Ankle fusion is a surgical procedure that permanently joins the bones of your ankle joint, typically the tibia and talus. By eliminating motion in the damaged joint, ankle fusion significantly reduces pain and improves stability for patients with advanced arthritis or complex ankle conditions.

When Is Ankle Fusion Recommended?

You may be a candidate for ankle fusion if you have:

  • End-stage ankle arthritis that hasn’t responded to conservative treatments

  • Post-traumatic arthritis following a previous fracture or injury

  • Chronic ankle instability or deformity

  • Severe pain that limits walking, standing, or daily activity

  • Failed prior ankle surgeries

Our board-certified orthopaedic surgeons will evaluate your condition through physical exams and imaging to determine the best treatment option.

What to Expect from Surgery and Recovery

Ankle fusion is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon removes damaged cartilage, aligns the bones correctly, and uses hardware such as screws or plates to hold them in place while the bones fuse together.

Recovery Timeline:

  • 6–12 weeks non-weightbearing in a cast or boot

  • Gradual return to walking with physical therapy

  • Full fusion typically occurs within 3–6 months

Most patients experience significant pain relief and increased walking ability after recovery. While motion at the ankle is reduced, most find they can walk comfortably and resume many activities.
