Trigger Finger
Stiff finger? Painful clicking or locking? Learn what causes trigger finger, how it’s treated, and when to seek expert care.
What Is Trigger Finger?
Trigger finger, medically known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is where one of your fingers gets stuck in a bent position and may snap when straightened, like pulling and releasing a trigger. It happens when inflammation narrows the space within the sheath surrounding the affected finger’s tendon.
Common Signs and Symptoms
Clicking or popping sensation when moving the finger
Pain or stiffness, especially in the morning
Finger locked in a bent position
Tenderness or a small lump at the base of the finger
Most Frequently Affected Fingers
Trigger finger can affect any finger, but it most commonly involves:
The ring finger
The thumb (also called “trigger thumb”)
The middle finger
What Causes Trigger Finger?
The condition is often caused by repetitive gripping, inflammation, or underlying health conditions. You may be at increased risk if you:
Have diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis
Perform work or hobbies requiring repetitive hand use
Are between ages 40 and 60
Are female (trigger finger occurs more often in women)
How Is Trigger Finger Treated?
Nonsurgical Options
Most cases improve with conservative care:
Rest and activity modification
Splinting the affected finger, especially at night
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Steroid injections to reduce tendon sheath inflammation
Surgical Treatment
If nonsurgical treatments don’t work, a minor outpatient surgery may be recommended. The goal is to release the tightened portion of the tendon sheath, restoring smooth motion.
When to See a Specialist
If your finger is locking, painful, or affecting your daily tasks, don’t wait. Early treatment can often prevent worsening and avoid surgery altogether.
