What Is a Partial Knee Replacement?

A partial knee replacement—also known as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty—is a surgical procedure that replaces only the damaged portion of the knee joint, rather than the entire knee. This procedure is typically recommended when damage is confined to one of the three compartments of the knee: medial (inside), lateral (outside), or patellofemoral (front of the knee).

Who Is a Candidate for Partial Knee Replacement?

You may be a candidate if:

• Knee pain is persistent despite conservative treatment

• Ligaments in the knee are still intact

• The joint has maintained some function and stability

Partial knee replacement is not typically recommended for patients with inflammatory arthritis, significant joint deformity, or widespread cartilage loss.
