Meniscal Tears and Surgery

Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment from Knee Expert

What Is a Meniscal Tear?

A meniscal tear is a common knee injury affecting the cartilage that cushions and stabilizes your knee joint. Each knee has two menisci — medial and lateral — which can be torn during sports, repetitive motion, or as part of the aging process.

Types of Meniscal Tears

  • Traumatic tears (often seen in athletes)

  • Degenerative tears (more common in older adults)

  • Tear patterns: horizontal, radial, flap, bucket-handle

Signs and Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear

Patients often experience:

  • Sharp or aching pain in the knee

  • Swelling or stiffness

  • Catching or locking of the joint

  • A popping sensation at the time of injury

  • Difficulty bending or straightening the knee

Diagnosing a Meniscal Tear

At Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin, our experienced orthopaedic providers use:

  • Detailed physical exams

  • Special diagnostic tests like the McMurray maneuver

  • In-house MRI imaging when needed

This helps us confirm the diagnosis and determine the best treatment approach.

Treatment Options for Meniscal Tears

Treatment depends on the type and location of the tear, your age, activity level, and overall knee health.

Nonsurgical Treatments

  • Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE)

  • Anti-inflammatory medications

  • Physical therapy to restore strength and range of motion

  • Bracing or activity modification

Meniscus Surgery

When conservative treatment isn’t effective or the tear is severe, surgery may be recommended. Our specialists offer:

  • Arthroscopic meniscectomy (removal of the damaged tissue)

  • Meniscus repair (suturing the tear, typically for younger patients with tears near the outer edge)

Both procedures are minimally invasive and performed on an outpatient basis.

Recovery After Meniscus Surgery

Recovery time varies depending on the procedure:

  • Meniscectomy: Return to activity in 2 to 4 weeks

  • Meniscus repair: May require 3 to 6 months of recovery and structured physical therapy

Our team will guide you through every step of your rehabilitation to help you regain full function.
